The purpose of computing is insight, not numbers.
I’ve spent years training professionals on how to communicate clearly and persuasively. And for most of the scientists, engineers, and other data-focused professionals this is their #1 takeaway from the training:
Don’t just dump data points, but connect those dots to tell a story that gives meaning to the data.
Here’s one easy way to apply this principle to your next presentation.
After you share a chart, a figure, or some piece of data, lead with this phrase:
“What this means…”
- What this means is we are going to hit our deadline
- What this means is we will need to find ways to cut costs for the next iteration
This is a simple, powerful way to bring insight that informs your audience instead of just dumping data that overwhelms your audience.
In your next presentation, give it a shot!
